A Potent Dose of Live Gizzard

by Jonathan Cohen

It was a long time coming (to be precise, 29 months since the originally scheduled dates, which were postponed three times due to COVID), but King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard finally made their Red Rocks debut two weeks ago as part of a three-show run featuring “marathon three-hour sets” each night, with no repeated songs. The final performance will take place Nov. 2, and will air with professionally post-mixed audio beginning Nov. 6.

Whether you’re a devoted fan of the prolific Australian sextet or a curious newcomer, the Red Rocks run offers an incredibly potent dose of live Gizzard. Indeed, the band seems to be performing at the peak of its on-stage power, even as it releases three distinct new albums in the month of October (its 21st, 22nd and 23rd since forming in 2010). Below are some highlights from the first two Red Rocks shows, as well as what fans might expect at the finale. In the meantime, be sure to check out nugs.net’s King Gizzard catalog, which includes more than a dozen audio and video releases taped all over the world.

Night one: 10/10/2022

As cloaked in mystique as Gizzard often is, the group defused any artifice between band and audience on opening night by nonchalantly walking onstage to tune and adjust its instruments 10 minutes before showtime. Frontman Stu Mackenzie was wearing a green alligator visor in a nod to the lovable Gizzard mascot, and once the concert began, there was no doubt of its significance for the musicians on stage. “I can’t feel my legs,” keyboardist Ambrose Kenny-Smith shouted. “Holy shit,” guitarist Joey Walker said. “Let’s get fucked up! Have a good time and love each other.”

After two blistering songs from 2019’s thrash-metal extravaganza “Infest the Rat’s Net,” the first set was highlighted by “Magenta Mountain” and its long, tense closing jam with Walker on analog synth, the wobbly “O.N.E.” (with a tease of the dark, heavy boogie “Straws in the Wind,” which appeared later in its complete form) and the penultimate “The River,” its snappy, retro vibe upended by teases of the more sinister “Crumbling Castle” and “Wah Wah.” The set wrapped with the nine-minute-plus “Magma” from Gizzard’s recent album “Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava,” the product of intensive jam sessions that were then edited together by Mackenzie after the fact.

As a bonus treat for the sold-out crowd of nearly 10,0000, Gizzard premiered the first of two songs on another new album, “Laminated Denim,” over the PA during intermission two days before its proper release. “Laminated Denim” was also available for early sale at the merch stand at both shows, if you were willing to brave the 45-minute line.

Set two roared to life with “Rattlesnake,” one of the best examples of Gizzard’s innate ability to work riffs and grooves into lengthy instrumental explorations (this time with teases of no less than five other songs, including the next three on the set list: “Automation,” “Honey” and “Sleep Drifter”). “Ataraxia” was much faster and precise than its studio version on 2021’s “L.W.,” its chorus hook sticking in the brain like musical toffee.

For a group that most certainly jams but has not made many overt references to scene forefathers like The Grateful Dead, Gizzard submitted to the legends of jam band past on “Evil Death Roll,” its major-key, Dead-style workout tuning directly into the spirit of this legendary venue. The head-bopping continued on the new song “Ice V,” its fizzy, New Orleans swamp funk providing an intriguing transition into three songs from the concept album “Murder of the Universe,” narrated by opening act Leah Senior, who provided the same service on the studio versions.

Walker’s girlfriend later brought out shots for the whole band in honor of Walker’s impending birthday, while Kenny-Smith prowled the stage to sing “The Grim Reaper,” what he described as “some weird ass satanic rap for ya.” The 27-song evening concluded with a final dose of thrash-y rock’n’roll in “Planet B,” which Gizzard finished exactly one minute curfew.

Night two: 10/12/2022

What better way to start the second Red Rocks show than with a 15-minute “The Dripping Tap,” one of Gizzard’s best new extended jams? During a quiet breakdown in the song, Walker was presented with a birthday cake by his girlfriend and manager, remarking, “I was expecting that later in the set!” “Gaia” featured a taut, spacey section reminiscent of Tool, with drummer Michael Cavanagh nodding to that band’s Danny Carey with his creative roto-tom work. Walker positively ripped on “Predator X,” even finger-tapping a la Eddie Van Halen and throwing in one bar of “Perihelion” (which would later open set two).

“Doom City” was futuristic surf rock crossed with Black Sabbath doom, while “K.G.L.W.” was absolutely wicked, a sea of bobbing heads offering their full compliance in the audience. The set wound down was the rarity “Sea of Trees” (played for just the 15th time since 2012), its sleazy groove segueing into the satisfying southern rock of “The Bitter Boogie.”

The party was instantly restarted during set two’s “I’m in Your Mind” / “I’m Not in Your Mind” suite, the guitar riffs of which imagined being chased through a Middle East bazaar. Leah Senior returned to narrate six songs from “Murder of the Universe,” a jaw-dropping display of Gizzard’s instrumental virtuosity and dynamic command.

From there, it was one delight after another — the baby-making soul of “Ambergris,” the slow-cooking “Iron Lung” and its emphatic, Kenny-Smith-belted outtro, “Robot Stop” and “Mr. Beat,” which teased back to “Iron Lung.” The members of Leah Senior’s band snuck onstage to spray Gizzard with silly string and bring the 32-song performance to a close, as the crowd high-fived, hugged and gazed behind it at Red Rocks’ impossibly beautiful natural surroundings.

What’s left?

Knowing that the Red Rocks shows will feature no repeat songs, we can identify some likely suspects for the third gig on Nov. 2. They include favorites such as “Venusian 2,” “Plastic Boogie,” “Self Immolate,” Am I in Heaven,” “Float Along — Fill Your Lungs,” the complete “Crumbling Castle” and “Intrasport,” plus several songs from “Murder of the Universe” that weren’t played this week, “Shanghai” (the lone song in live rotation from the 2021 album “Butterfly 3030”), newer material such as “Sadie Sorceress” and anything from the upcoming album “Changes,” which will be released a few days before Red Rocks night three. One thing’s for sure: King Gizzard always seizes big moments like this, making Nov. 2 a show certainly not to be missed.

Trouble No More Picks Up Where the Allman Brothers Left Off in New York

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Eat A Peach.

Trouble No More is picking up where the Allman Brothers Band left off. The new group celebrating the Allmans will play their debut this weekend at the Beacon Theater in New York, where the Allman Brothers played some of their most special shows and performed for the last time in 2014. The two-night run on March 25th & 26th falls 53 years exactly from the Allman Brothers’ first rehearsal and marks the 50th anniversary of their 1972 album Eat a Peach

Booking agent CJ Strock, who represented ABB for many years, pulled the band together. Named for the Muddy Waters cover that started the Allman Brothers’ career, Trouble No More is fittingly founded on another sibling duo, guitarist Brandon “Taz” Niederauer and bassist Dylan Niederauer, who are eager to keep up their idols’ tradition of electric live shows. Peter Levin, who played keyboard with the Gregg Allman Band, is on board and Lamar Williams, Jr., whose father was the Allman Brothers’ bassist for several years, will lead vocals. Trouble No More also features guitarist and singer Daniel Donato, drummer Jack Ryan, pedal steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier, and drummer Nikki Glaspie from The Nth Power.

In honor of the album’s anniversary, Trouble No More curated a playlist of the best live tracks from Eat a Peach, available exclusively in the nugs.net app.

Trouble No More’s Friday night show is sold out, but tickets are still available for Saturday night, which marks the 53 year anniversary of the Allman Brothers Band’s very first rehearsal together on March 26, 1969. Follow @nugsnet on Twitter for a chance to win front row seats for Saturday, March 26th at the Beacon Theater!

2020: HOW WE LISTENED

2020 changed everything we know about the live music experience. The industry as we know it fell apart, but the live music community is resilient. From the moment band names were pulled off marquees the only question was “how do we get back out there?” We saw an evolution of the live music experience, and the way we listened to and consumed live music changed dramatically.

Thanks to the internet, concerts became more accessible than ever in 2020. Fans of all genres no longer needed to be in a certain city or at a certain venue. It didn’t matter whether the show was in a living room or on the track of a motor speedway, every show was available to everyone. Below is a list featuring some of our favorite shows that highlight the ways music adapted to 2020, and the ways we enjoyed listening to our favorite artists:

LIVE CONCERTS

Before the pandemic hit, we actually got a few months to revel in the true live music experience. The first few months of the year are usually the time for Island concerts and Beacon runs, so we were lucky to get some truly special shows.

Dead & Company: Playing in the Sand – Cancun, Mexico 1/19/20

Gov’t Mule: Island Exodus 11 – Runaway Bay, Jamaica

Widespread Panic: Beacon Theatre – New York, NY 3/2/20

The Brothers: Madison Square Garden – New York, NY 3/10/20

311: Park Theater – Las Vegas, NV 3/13/20

IN-HOME CONCERTS

Bands like Goose invited us into their living rooms for intimate acoustic performances. It was an early escape that connected us to our favorite artists when we needed it most.

Goose: T’s House – Somewhere, Connecticut 3/15/20

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong: Live From Out There -Somewhere, USA 4/17/20

STUDIO CONCERTS

Once it became apparent that live audiences wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon, bands reunited in the studio to record shows and share virtually. BIG Something dubbed their studio series “Escape From the Living Room,” I think we all felt that.

BIG Something: Escape From The Living Room – Winston Salem, NC 8/16/20

Metallica: Metallica HQ – San Rafael, CA 11/14/20

DRIVE-IN CONCERTS

When the weather turned warm, drive in theaters suddenly came back into style in ways not seen in half a century. The ability to play a show to a crowd that is safely inside their cars was the perfect solution to getting live music to live audiences in the age of social distancing.

Umphrey’s McGee: Atlanta Motor Speedway, Hampton, GA 10/9/20

Aqueous: Transit Drive-In – Lockport, NY 6/19/20

The Disco Biscuits: Yarmouth Drive-In – Cape Cod, MA 10/19/20

LIMITED CAPACITY EVENTS

Eventually, spaces with large outdoor capacities began opening with extremely limited and distanced in-person shows. South Farms in Morris, Connecticut became a space for Twiddle, Warren Haynes, moe., and other artists to play live outdoor concerts that fans could safely enjoy. We’ve come a long way from the living room.

Twiddle: Greenbush Studio – Ferrisburgh, VT 5/30/21

Warren Haynes: South Farms – Morris, CT 9/12/20

moe.: South Farms – Morris, CT 10/25/20

ARCHIVAL CONCERT RELEASES

With so many bands sidelined for the year, it was also a great chance to dig into the archives with classic shows from our favorite artists of yesterday and today.

Pearl Jam: The Fox Theatre – Atlanta, GA 4/3/94

Jerry Garcia and John Kahn: Garcia Live Vol. 14 – The Ritz, New York, NY 1/27/86

The White Stripes: Urga – Tokyo, Japan 10/27/2000

New Exclusive Live Archives From Wilco

Wilco is back with the latest entry in their nugs.net exclusive “Front of House” series. This release features both nights of Wilco’s 2010 “An Evening With” tour stop in Montclair, New Jersey. Check out Marc Prizer’s notes on the shows below. Click here to listen to start listening.

*

“Three-hour shows! Acoustic sets! Deep cuts! On-stage restaurant gift certificate giveaways! All of these factors made the Spring 2010 “An Evening With” tour one of the most revered among long-time fans. Initially starting with a hefty 33-35 song length, by the time the tour rolled into the central New Jersey town of Montclair, the show had expanded to occasionally hit 38 songs played over 3-plus hours onstage. The sets were so long that, in order to catch their collective breath, the band really did take a few moments mid-show to give away local restaurant gift certificates to a few lucky fans.

*

But quantity ain’t nothin’ without quality, and these shows have a high quantity of quality (see what we did there?). Perhaps the coolest aspect of these shows is how the performance morphs, via the noise-coda of “Poor Places”, from it’s initial hi-wattage electricity to an intimate mid-show acoustic set…and then back “up” again after “Airline To Heaven’s” crescendo. In addition to its counterbalance of timbre and dynamics, the acoustic set also provided a platform for the performance of rarely-played deep cuts; these Montclair shows include “Someday Some Morning Sometime”, “When You Wake Up Feeling Old”, and the deepest of deep tracks, “More Like The Moon” (featuring a beautiful extended Jeff Tweedy acoustic guitar solo). These shows also include powerful readings of the Big Star songs “In The Street” and “Thank You Friends” as a tribute to the then-recent passing of Wilco hero Alex Chilton.

*

All in all, the two shows in Montclair showcase a whopping 57 different songs, presenting a near-complete representation of what went down during that “An Evening With” tour.” – Marc Prizer

Halloween 2019 Preview

Halloween is just around the corner. Bands love to go all out with tricks and treats for fans during their special Halloween shows. Each year we see performances filled with fun covers, spooky-themed setlists, and some killer costumes. We’ve put together a list featuring some of the thrilling shows we’re excited about this Halloween.

Dead & Company

Dead & Co. is joining the Halloween fun this year. We’re excited to see what surprises the band has in-store at Madison Square Garden on October 31st. If you can’t make it to NYC next Thursday, we’ll have a full webcast of the Halloween show on nugs.tv.

Greensky Bluegrass

We already know a little about what to expect from Greensky Bluegrass’ 2019 Halloween show. The band has announced their third “Totally Bitchin’ ’80s Halloween Party.”

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

There will be plenty of Talking Heads and Cake at Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s three-night extravaganza kicking off Halloween night. The run, titled “Stop Making Cake,” is bound to be a fun time. Ahead of the Halloween run, PPPP shared their official video for “King Kong” featuring Here Come The Mummies, everyone’s favorite mummified funk band.

Umphrey’s McGee

UM has declared that their Halloween show at The Anthem in Philly will be a hell-raising night of Halloween revelry. The band is keeping tight-lipped about their plans for this year’s show, but we do know they’ll be leaving the mashups behind in favor of a “festive surprise.”

Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic, New Orleans, Halloween. That’s all we know about this year’s Panic Halloween show. But then again, that’s about all we need to know.

The String Cheese Incident

SCI is promising extended Halloween incidents starting this weekend at Suwannee Hulaween, followed by two nights at The Fillmore in Philadelphia, and concluding with two nights at The Palladium in Worcester, MA.

Q&A With Midnight North

Today we’re officially welcoming Midnight North to the nugs.net family. Led by Elliott Peck & Grahame Lesh, Midnight North has mastered their rootsy Americana sound over the last six years. Audio from eight shows is now available to download or stream in the nugs.net app. We got the chance to talk to guitarists and vocalists Grahame Lesh and Elliott Peck, bass player Connor O’Sullivan, and drummer Nathan Graham before they head out on their twenty-city fall tour this weekend.

Q: Midnight North has a unique combination of sounds, stemming from genres including roots, rock, Americana and jam. Where have these influences stemmed from?

Grahame Lesh: We are influenced by so many bands and genres. Yes, roots, rock and Americana definitely are big deals for us, but also the blues, country, funk, electronica and a ton more. We have individual influences that each member brings to the table, and those mesh together into the band that we’ve become. The single biggest influence in the band’s beginning, especially the songwriting Elliott and I did, was the way duos like Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings sing together. Later on we evolved into really trying to draw from CSNY, the Band and the Workingman’s/American Beauty era Grateful Dead. But we never shy away from any bandmember’s ideas no matter what genre or situation they come from – “Roamin'” has Connor’s funk basslines woven into it these days, while Nathan’s clawhammer banjo playing really helped shape our new single “Long View”. Whatever helps the song, the story, and the performance is what we’ll use.

Q: You have a very old-school soulful sense of lyricism. Where does Midnight North get their songwriting done and what inspires your lyrics?

GL: We follow the song. Whenever an idea comes to us we follow it wherever it leads us. It usually starts with a fairly stripped down song idea from Elliott or myself, and then the band takes it from there and makes it into a song. Our lyrics are often inspired by our own lives on and off the road, but they also can be stories we want to tell. For our last record, “Under The Lights”, both of us naturally found ourselves writing about our experiences on the road, which led to our travels becoming an unofficial theme for the album. Despite that, I usually write lyrics at home, though I’ve found myself writing more and more in other places. Recently airplanes are a place where I’ve recently found myself jotting down lots of ideas.

Elliott Peck: We right lyrics pretty individually between the songwriters in the band, but for me, I like to draw on novels I’m reading or familiar stories that I relate to create the lyrics behind a song. Sometimes a line will jump out at me and help me launch the story idea, and other times I come up with the story line first, and then work to find the right language to tell it and create the feeling I want to express.

Q: nugs.net has hosted streams out of Terrapin Crossroads, a venue where Midnight North has played countless shows. So, we have to ask, what has the band’s favorite Terrapin Crossroads moment been?

Connor O’Sullivan: Yes, there have been so many! A memorable moment early on in TXR’s history was when Midnight North was planning to cover Gram Parsons’ entire Grievous Angel album in the bar. We kinda had this little tribute night planned. Phil got wind of it and jumped on board to play some bass as did a couple of the other regular TXR musicians. Then as we were running the tunes in the Grate Room beforehand, we find out Mike Gordon is gonna drop by! So the whole night quickly took a big turn into something unexpected and magical! Now that we’re on the road so much we don’t get to play TXR too often. When we are in town these days it’s a special evening with a full house of longtime fans and supporters.

Q: You handpicked eight shows to add to the nugs.net catalog. Which tracks stand out from the batch, and why?

Roamin'” Garcia’s 5/9/2019

CO: As I was mastering the shows for Nugs and scrubbing through the Garcia’s show I came across the drum solo during the Roamin’ jam and it was just amazing to hear again! It got me excited to release more live material.

“Highway Song” River Street Jazz Cafe 8/23/2019

Nathan Graham: This was the first Midnight North tune I ever heard before I was playing with the band. I loved it then – and I love it now. Enjoy this lively rendition from Wilkes Barre PA.

“Greene County” Wonder Ballroom 1/25/2019 + “Ripple” Salvage Station 12/29/2019

GL: Listening back I couldn’t stop listening to the amazing guests we’ve been lucky enough to have joined us. Dan Lotti of Dangermuffin singing “Ripple” in Asheville, G Grass and Andy Hall from the Infamous Stringdusters joining us on “Greene County” in Portland – these moments are so fun and we’re so lucky to share them with our friends on the road.

Now Streaming: Charlie Hunter

Live performances from legendary guitarist Charlie Hunter are now available to stream on nugs.net. Known for expertly bending and traversing genres such as Blues and Jazz, Charlie Hunter’s music is made to be heard live. Right now you can open the nugs.net app and listen to a dozen live shows stretching all the way back to 1996.

Hunter was born in Rhode Island and developed a detailed knowledge of the guitar from his mother who repaired them for a living. In 1993, after some time playing with Michael Franti’s “Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy,” Hunter released his first album as the Charlie Hunter Trio. Since then, he’s released music under a variety of titles and toured with a number of notable icons like Galactic’s Stanton Moore. When we asked Hunter about his dream lineup for a band he told us he’s been lucky to play with some great musicians and he wouldn’t change a thing.

His signature sound comes from a custom seven-string guitar. Hunter uses the extra string to add a bass range that he can use for counterpointing. He is truly a master of the guitar and his live improvisations are a treat to the ear of any fan. Give these shows a listen and stay tuned for even more releases from Charlie Hunter on nugs.net.

Read our full Q+A here:

Q- You’ve made some really interesting custom modifications to the classical guitar. Could you walk us through how those modifications have changed your music throughout the years?

Guitar is the ultimate folk instrument. You can configure it however you want. I just happened to add bass range and do a lot of counterpoint on it

Q- You play such a range of venues, big and small, all over the country. What are your favorite venues and cities to play?

I honestly don’t have a favorite. Just happy to be able to play a gig!

Q- If you were given the golden ticket to form a supergroup with any musicians, dead or alive, who would you include?

I’ve been pretty lucky to play with great musicians so I wouldn’t change a thing

Red Hot Chili Peppers Live At The Pyramids

Coming off of their Australia / New Zealand run, The Red Hot Chili Peppers will be playing live at the Giza Pyramids in Egypt this Friday. For those of us unable to make it to The Pyramids this weekend, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have a special treat planned. This Friday’s show will stream for free on nugs.tv!

This will be the first time a concert is webcast live from The Pyramids and the band couldn’t be more excited. The Pepper’s founding member and bassist, Flea, expressed his excitement in a recent Instagram post.

“I remember the first time the red hots played outside of la in 1983, I was beyond thrilled. We drove up to San Francisco and performed at I-Beam club. Man, we were international touring superstars I couldn’t believe it and it meant everything me to show those people in Northern California what we were about, to pour my heart out, for us to give every fiber of our beings in the process of bringing our music to life….. Then when we first went to Europe and my mind was blown, all the different cultures, connecting with people who didn’t speak English! And then Russia, and Asia and on and on around the world. Before each new place my body tingled with excitement, a yearning for a new mystery to unfold, a fascination with a new culture, the possibility of new friends, tasting new food, smelling new tastes, absorbing new rhythms. Learning. Learning. Learning. It is happening again right now, my heart is abuzz with joy at the prospect of performing in Egypt. I’m so grateful and humbled for the impending experience.”

To celebrate this historic show we are releasing nine new live shows from the band’s recent Australia / New Zealand tour for purchase today at nugs.net. These shows are packed with high energy and some awesome surprises including the first live inclusion of the 2003 single “Fortune Faded” in nearly 12 years. While in Australia, the band also paid tribute to Aussie legends, the Divinyls.
